COES Caledonia (UK) Ltd
COES Caledonia (UK) Ltd. is a brand new business set up by China Ocean Engineering Shanghai, better known as Shanghai Salvage, to win work in the North Sea. COES specialise in offshore construction and decommissioning, ocean going towage, salvage and wreck removal and offshore renewable activity worldwide. COES hopes that a base on the eastern seaboard of Scotland will enable it to break into the offshore decommissioning and offshore renewable energy markets in the UK, Norwegian and Dutch sectors of the North Sea.
COES identified a suitable property in Dundee One, at River Court on the central waterfront, and their office suite takes advantage of a south-easterly aspect to create a generous, bright space with a visual connection to the River Tay. The floorplate was laid out to accommodate 14 people, including engineers and support staff within a mixture of cellular and open plan offices. The fit-out consists of an informal reception point backing onto a central social space, partly screened by three-quarter height partitions. Beyond that lies an open plan office space with workstations positioned close to natural light and views across the Firth of Tay and nearby Road Bridge.
The scheme’s colour palette was inspired by a seascape, with a subtly-textured carpet evoking the sea and a translucent coloured graphic which diffuses light and softens the wall between the boardroom and reception. The colour scheme also subtly picks up on COES’s corporate identity. The project was budget led, and had to be complete by early December to receive the COES President who travelled from China to officially open the office. The success of the project was founded on a good working relationship with the client, “Who was always open to our ideas and trusted us to make design decisions".
