Overview
The iconic McLellan Works building on Glasgow’s Sauchiehall street has become Hoare Lea’s new home, creating a collaborative environment for their staff, after significant expansion. They wanted to provide a place with a relaxed feel in a striking location that facilitated agile working. We worked with the client to design and build the space, that integrated the company’s brand into the design, without compromising the attractive original interior.
Approach
The driving factor behind Hoare Lea’s move was to find new accommodation with a relaxed feel that encouraged collaborative working. The company needed a larger site to accommodate their expanded staffing levels, and to allow everyone to come together for group meetings. They also wanted to source a more central office to increase their brand presence.
Our Design and Build team were delighted to rise to the challenge of working inside this beautiful space. It was important to design as sympathetically as possible, so we focused on complementing the original architecture by celebrating the existing structure. We also integrated elements of Hoare Lea’s branding, using an open plan layout with classic colouring to enhance rather than obstruct the existing features.
Sustainability
Another key aspect of this project was to create a sustainable space that was fit for the future. To help realise this, all removable furniture from the previous location was reused rather than disposed of. The carpet tiles we selected were made from 100% recycled content, and sustainably produced fabrics were chosen for new furniture. We also installed zip taps and upgraded light fittings rather than replacing them.
Outcome
The end result is an attractive environment with both open and closed meeting areas, bar seating and a kitchen/cafe area that accommodates a variety of working styles. A focal town hall space with tiered seating allows the Hoare Lea team to come together as a group for all-company meetings. All the additions accentuate the interior, without masking the building’s beauty, providing a premises that’s both functional and pleasant to be in.
