Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital-The Archie Foundation
Within the heart of Royal Aberdeen’s Children’s Hospital, the Archie Foundation provide support facilities to accommodate the relatives of the young patients. SPACE refurbished the communal areas to create an open lounge and kitchen area and prepare a sample bedroom to facilitate found raising for the remaining 19 bed rooms. The spaces were to offer a ‘sanctuary’ away from the stresses of the hospital.
Along with the intricate program & logistical restriction of a building site in the middle of a functioning hospital, the design challenge was to create a home from home with in the strict environment constraints of a clinical building. Balancing the design & performance of all materials to meet maintenance and infection control requirements with a non-utilitarian look & feel. Natural look finishes to the hard surfaces, a soft colour pallet and the large scale graphics transport the space away from the hospital and into a calm landscape.
