Heriot Watt University
SPACE recently completed the fit-out of the Heriot Watt University Learning Commons. The university required a fresh new work environment for students to relax and study, providing work areas with up to date IT functions, rooms and a new improved kitchen and servery area.
The Learning Commons, which is located on the ground floor of the Hugh Nisbet Building, is a supported study and learning environment that will complement and supplement the Cameron Smail Library, providing more spaces for collaborative and social study with Information Services staff on hand to assist where required. The study space adjoins a remodelled Elements catering outlet, which will be open as a drop in and/ or take away facility.
This £1.5M project has focussed on improving the student experience, particularly in respect of study space. In response, it is proposed that the Learning Commons will provide;
- A state-of-the art digital learning and study centre, with extended hours of access and a flexible support model.
- A vibrant study ‘destination’: A space that is bright, attractive, appealing and fun – a ‘go to’ place for students.
- Over 200 seats offering a variety and choice of learning and study settings (including 120-140 study settings with additional 60-80 seat provision).
