Edinburgh Colleges was formed following the merger of 3 independent colleges in 2012/13. An expansion and refurbishment project had already commenced at the Sighthill Campus during this merger and saw a number of internal alterations taking place within the existing buildings as well as a brand new Atrium extension to create a student hub, café and informal meeting and breakout space. SPACE were engaged on the project by Project Managers Turner and Townsend who recognised a need to bring in specialist expertise to manage both the FF&E package and the interior design transition stemming from the newly formed Edinburgh Colleges brand.
SPACE were appointed quite late in the process when the construction works had already commenced, however our designers developed a scheme which reflected the new brand identity whilst keeping the costs within the existing construction costs parameters.
The loose furniture package was designed with the college departments fully engaged in the process. SPACE then ran a tender for the furniture package and appointed the supplier on the college’s behalf. SPACE's design staff were on hand during the installation of the furniture to ensure that the product was delivered correctly, undamaged and ready for use. The Sighthill campus was the first re-brand roll-out closely followed by the Granton and Midlothian campuses utilising the same look and feel to tie the 3 sites together.
Our designers created a new brand fabric for the college working with manufacturers to create a cohesive but cost effective solution which tied the brand and the interiors together and has proved a useful legacy beyond the project.
