Nalco Champion specialise in dedicated chemical solutions, and research is an essential element of their process. SPACE worked with Nalco Champion to assess their existing facilities and practices, which identified the need for a new centre of excellence. SPACE worked closely with the client to prepare a project brief, and following a competitive tender process, received a full appointment as project architects. SPACE proposed an ecologically sustainable approach utilising passive means of reducing energy consumption to the fullest possible extent.
The building is designed with research at the heart, with the laboratories within a glazed atrium around which the remainder of the building is arranged, comprising of offices and other accommodation. The target BREEAM rating was set as ‘Good’ – the building achieved a verified rating of ‘Excellent’ (one of the first buildings in Aberdeen to do so), achieved within the client’s budget.
