What does a typical day look like for you?
My day typically starts with a drive through the Angus countryside, then on past Dundee central Waterfront area and along the riverside to the office. The countryside is ever changing and often stunning. The Waterfront area is always interesting. I’ve been a technician for 35 years or so and it’s still the case that every day is different, it’s still enjoyable though!
What was your first job?
It was a cracker. It was a summer job with my local Council Street Lighting Department, doing street lighting surveys! Typically, two of us would collect a “Cooncil pool car” (a hideous yellow, Vauxhall Viva), then nip into the pie shop for lunch before setting off logging street lamp types and condition. The route was up to us but surprisingly, usually entailed arriving somewhere scenic around midday.
What’s your favourite place in the world and why?
My favourite place has to Sainte Maxime on the Cote d’Azur. It’s in a fantastic location just across the bay from St Tropez and within easy reach of Nice. It has amazing weather, great food, wine and friendly people.
Who is your hero and why?
I’m not a hero worshipper but in the spirit of this questionnaire, I’d say Keith Floyd. My wife cunningly gave me “Floyd on France” for my 25th birthday and I’ve never looked back. I love cooking, but it is best accompanied by a glass of red wine! I’ve never made a Floyd recipe that doesn’t work. I commend him to you.
If you could have dinner with anyone (dead or alive!) who would it be and why?
The best meals and enjoyable times are always had in the company of friends. I’d therefore choose to have a bunch of the usual suspects “Chez Nous” for dinner round the big table. Hopefully the guitars, keyboard and drums would also be there and it would all end in a fabulous sing-along.
If you could have one super power, what would it be?
That’s an easy one. It would be my “Wand (seriously?) of Good Health”. Nothing else is as important.
Describe yourself in 3-words
Honest, sociable and stubborn.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
This came up at our New Year party. I was innocently imagining Michael J Fox, Alan Ladd or some other short, screen icon. Then, without hesitation, a dear friend suggested Martin Freeman. He’s the bloke from “The Office”. There seemed to be general agreement round the table. I’m still trying to work out if I’m offended.
